Enhance Preview XT 2.1.4 - Special Edition (EPXT-SE) is a native XTensions module for QuarkXPress 4.0 that enables you to view high resolution previews instead of the standard low resolution previews QuarkXPress normally displays, even at view magnifications up to 800%.
The ability to view these enhanced previews is especially useful when you need to precisely position an image, edit clipping paths, or display an image with improved color accuracy.
EPXT-SE can enhance the screen display of all standard color, grayscale, and bitmap (line art) pixel-based images supported by QuarkXPress and any currently loaded picture-import XTensions. (Vector EPS images cannot be enhanced.) It is important to note that the enhanced previews do not affect or replace your original images and will not conflict with any existing workflow.

- Assign user-defined keyboard shortcuts to all EPXT commands
- Control the display quality and file size of enhanced previews

* GETTING STARTED *
The first time you launch QuarkXPress with EPXT-SE installed, a folder called Precision Separation Tables is created within your QuarkXPress application folder. When EPXT-SE is running, it uses the two files stored in the Precision Separation Tables folder. You should leave this folder in your QuarkXPress folder. If you delete the Precision Separation Tables folder, it will be recreated the next time you launch QuarkXPress with EPXT-SE.
When EPXT-SE is running, two menu commands and a floating palette are added to
the QuarkXPress interface:
- Choosing the Enhance Preview XT-SE command in the View menu displays a
submenu with commands that let you show or hide the Enhance Preview XT-SE
palette, show or hide enhanced previews, and show or hide antialiasing.
- Choosing the Enhance Preview XT-SE command in the Utilities menu displays a submenu with commands that let you create an enhanced preview for the image in the currently selected picture box and display the About Enhance Preview XT - Special Edition screen.
- The Enhance Preview XT-SE palette contains buttons that let you create an
enhanced preview for the image in the currently selected picture box, show or hide enhanced previews, show or hide antialiasing, and display the About Enhance Preview XT - Special Edition screen.

* CREATING AN ENHANCED PREVIEW *
There are two ways to create an enhanced preview:
1) Click on a picture box that contains the image you want to enhance, choose Enhance Preview XT-SE from the Utilities menu, then choose Enhance Selected Preview from the submenu.
2) Click on a picture box that contains the image you want to enhance, then
click on the leftmost button in the EPXT-SE palette. (If the EPXT-SE palette is not displayed, choose Enhance Preview XT-SE from the View menu, then choose Show Palette.)
* TIPS *
Unsupported File Formats.
In general, pixel-based image formats, such as TIFF, JPEG, ScitexCT, and pixel-based EPS files, include data that's used when high resolution output is produced. EPXT-SE accesses this high resolution data when it generates enhanced previews. Some image files, such as PICT and GIF files on Macintosh computers and BMP, DIB, RLE, WMF, PCX, and GIF files on Windows-based PCs, are imported in their entirety when you use the Get Picture command. Because there's no additional high resolution data to access, EPXT-SE does not let you create enhanced previews for these files.
Additionally, EPXT-SE does not support enhancement of vector EPS files and EPS files that combine images and PostScript (for example, EPS files created with QuarkXPress' Save Page as EPS feature).
Enhancing Images on Locked Media.
All cache files are stored in the same folder as the original source image with the exception of images that are located on a locked volume (such as a CD-ROM). Cache files for these images are placed in a folder called "Preview Cache (locked vols.)" in the QuarkXPress application folder.
Using QuickTime (JPEG Compression) to Reduce Size of Enhance Preview Cache
Files. [Windows Only.]
EPXT-SE will run without Apple's QuickTime installed, however, the resulting cache files will be approximately the same size as the original image and will take up more disk space than cache files created when QuickTime is running. Using QuickTime reduces the size of cache files while maintaining display quality.
Display Speed at High View Percentages.
If you find that screen redraw is slow when you move an enhanced preview with the Content tool, choose Hide Enhanced Previews (View menu) or click the Enhanced Previews - Off button in the Enhance Preview XT-SE palette. Once positioned, choose Show Enhanced Previews (View menu) or click the Enhanced Previews - On button in the palette to redisplay the enhanced previews.
Reducing Document Size.
If you intend to enhance your images, we recommend you set your Display preferences (Preferences -> Application -> Display) for Color TIFFs and Gray TIFFs to the lowest possible settings in the Application Preferences dialog box (8-bit for color TIFFs; 16 levels for grayscale TIFFs). This will help reduce the size of your QuarkXPress documents. Regardless of how you set QuarkXPress' Display preferences, EPXT-SE generates and displays the highest bit depth for color images and the maximum levels of gray for grayscale images.
Additional Product Information.
You can click on the Visit the KGA Web Site button in the About Enhance Preview XT - Special Edition screen to automatically access the KGA Web site. If you click this button, EPXT-SE will attempt to connect to the KGA Web site. Please make sure that you have your Internet setup configured correctly before selecting this option.
* KNOWN PROBLEMS AND INCOMPATIBILITIES *
Enhance Preview Commands Not Available.
If you find that EPXT-SE palette or menu commands are not available, you should use the Get Info dialog to increase the amount of memory allocated to QuarkXPress. We recommend that you add at least 2000K.
Contrast Modifications Not Supported.
EPXT-SE does not display contrast modifications made to enhanced previews via QuarkXPress' Contrast controls (Style menu). You will need to turn enhanced previews off to view contrast edits.
PlateMaker 1.0 DCS Files Not Supported.
EPXT-SE is not able to create enhanced previews for DCS files created with alap's PlateMaker 1.0 plug-in for Adobe Photoshop. These files do not contain the data necessary to generate an enhanced preview.
